The Lions reversed a four year trend Friday Night when they beat West Carroll 14-6 in the Jamboree. The 2000 Lions overcame a gutsy War Eagle offense and some miscues of their own to run away with a victory.
Camden started on defense with two big stops by Daniel Woodall and Andrew Ragsdale. Camden’s first offensive possesion stalled and a fumble on the punt snap was quickly turned into a positive with a Lions fumble recovery of the next West Carroll snap. Johnathan Hayes picked up a fumble and sprinted in for a touch down run to give Jeremy Harris a shot for his first extra point of the season to make it Lions 7 West Carroll 0.
West Carroll scored after a long drive, but the Lions defense had something to say about the two-point conversion attempt. Daniel Woodall and the Lions defensive line stood tall and the score was held to Camden 7, West Carroll 6.
On the next defensive series, Tim Moss and Daniel Woodall had a big defensive stop on the War Eagles back & Camden took the ball over on downs. Both teams traded fumbles, but Camden got the offense cranking and Johnathan Hayes fell in behind the big blocks of the right line and was in the end zone. Jeremy Harris was smooth on the extra point and the score ended up Lions 14, War Eagles 6.
Talking with Coach David Fisher after the game:
Coach Fisher commented on the need for a better showing when Camden has the ball: “Our scrimmages have been better offensively; We have to go back to the drawing board & see what was happening with the turnovers…I felt like we hurt ourselves more than the other team stopped us”
When asked about the offensive backs stepping up: “Johnathan Hayes broke a big touchdown run, (Jeremy) Harris & Nathan Leonard had some good tough runs inside, plus (Daniel) Woodall did an excellent job with some good blocks out on the corner for us. Ryne Haynie came in late for some work and we feel like we had a good day with our running backs”
On the Defensive team causing some pads to pop:
“The defense really played well, they stepped up tonight and played hard. We are going to have to have that for us to win some ball games this year.”
On West Carroll: “Those two running backs they have are as good as anybody we will see this year, except for Webster from Riverside. They are predicted by the Union City paper to win their region, so this was a pretty strong football team that we played tonight.”
When asked what the team would be working on this week: “We’ll be working on blocking, tackling, and hanging on to the football a little bit more!”.
