Lions roar at Bethel
The CHS Lions scrimmaged Covington Friday 15 Aug 08 at Bethel College in McKenzie. Talking with Lions Head Football Coach Kevin Ward about the scrimmage after “Meet the Lions” on Tuesday:
“We had a good scrimmage. They are a well coached 3-A team, bigger numbers on the sidelines than we had. They got up on us early 2-0 when we really beat ourselves; fumbled & turned it over on downs. We came back & had two good scoring drives, so it was a good night. We were again able to see some players on tape at game speed, and that will help us set our lineup. We needed the opportunity to evaluate our kids again, we will have one more week of that with the Jamboree against Bruceton. After that, evaluation is over, it’s time to get it done on the field. No injuries from the scrimmage, that’s always a good thing! Bumps & bruises that you would expect, but we don’t have any one out right now. We have kind of suffered with the injury bug the last couple years, so maybe we will be able to stay healthy into this season.”
About the artificial turf at Bethel:
“The turf was fine, we enjoy playing over there, it gives our kids a chance to play on a college field & get used to the surface that they will play on against Westview. UTM changed their surface to it this year & it’s a good opportunity. We have been going to Bethel, trying to, twice a year. We didn’t get over there this spring, but it is a good deal for us and Coach Dino Kakis. We appreciate them accommodating us like they have, letting us use their facilities.”
About the practice focus this next week headed into the Jamboree against Bruceton:
“We will focus on our kick off & kick return game, we know we won’t be able to really practice it once the season starts. It does give us a chance to concentrate on that at practice & spend a little time with our punt block teams & extra point/field goal team. It also allows us to further evaluate some kids that are question marks. We will get them the game early & seeing if they can handle the pressure in the huddle without the coaches & get the job done.”
On the 3rd quarter that Camden will scrimmage Bruceton at the Huntingdon Jamboree:
“We haven’t played Bruceton in a few years, kind of renews the rivalry in the community, but I really haven’t played against them much since I have been here. I respect what Coach Gilmer & his staff has done, the great tradition that they have with Coach Sturdivant & the players that have come out of there. It’s good to be able to play a quality program like that in a Jamboree game. We know playing them will help get us ready for our season opener.”
Let’s all buy our Jamboree tickets here from CHS players or coaches and travel with the team as they face Bruceton during the 3rd quarter of the Huntingdon Jamboree Friday, 22 Oct 08 at Paul Ward Stadium.
