The Camden Lions traveled to Huntingdon to play West Carroll in the 3rd quarter of the Jamboree. The weather was perfect, the stands were full & the Lion cheerleaders started it all off with "Here we go Lions!"
Camden started on offense on their 30 and conjure up a 7-play scoring drive. Senior quarterback Michael Gaskin hands it off to Derek Easley. Derek pushes the ball thru the right side of the line for a gain of 2. Gaskin completes a short throw to Derek at the right sideline for a gain of 2, 3rd & 6. Gaskin rolls left & spots Travis Capps behind the defenders - - good throw & catch -- and the Lions have a 1st down at the West Carroll (WC) 28. Kendrick Hudson on the delay run thru the left side of the line for a short gain. Derek takes the pitch around left end, close, they measure, it's 3rd & an inch. Gaskin sells the fake hand off left, then gives it to Devon White behind left guard & he adds a move to make it 1st down at the 9! What'cha' gonna' do? Give it to Devon, the left side of the line levels a bunch of Eagles & he trots into the end zone for the score! Tanner Hudson adds his first extra point of the '09 season & with 7:16 left in the "half", the Lions are up 7-0.
The Lions defense is on the field to keep big Mo' wearing Black & Gold as Jordan Murphy leads the stop after a gain of 2. Demetric Dunlap hammers the dive play over the center & WC is in 3rd & 4. The shotgun snap gets dribbled back to the QB, he is running for his life & Jordan rolls him down to make it 4th & 5. They line up to punt, another bad snap, and Jackson Burns leads the stop with a HOST of Camden Lions to make it CHS ball inside the 30.
The Lions offense can't get it's claws hooked in the turf & after 3 runs & and incomplete pass, the War Eagles take over at the Lions 29...
...just right for us as the Lions defense rip the ball out and jump on it at the 28 yard line! The offense is back in business & Kendrick runs the sweep around left end, cuts inside & gains 6. Gaskin gives to Devon, he slants toward right end, adds a stutter step to make one Eagle miss & runs to the right pylon to score! Tanner drills it high & straight to make it 14-0 with 2:43 left to play in the 1st.
West Carroll's turn with the ball & the Lions defense is back at work. Despite some big stops by Dunlap, Murphy, Cody Robin & Dakota Summers, WC is able to string together a 7-play scoring drive that finishes with a pitch around left end for six. Jordan Murphy is able to put huge pressure on the extra point attempt and with 8:32 left to play, the score is 14-6.
Coach Ward & offensive coordinator William Blow pull out the stops & go with the roll out L O N G pass play down the right sideline. Gaskin rips it, Easley is behind the defender & makes the catch and scores! A one play scoring drive! Tanner spins it thru the big stix & with 8:19 left, Camden is up 21-6!
The Lions defense needs to make a stop so Jackson Burns tangles up the runner low, Blake Riley drops the hammer. A War Eagle run goes to our 45 & a 1st down. The pitch is fumbled & recovered but Jacob Sharum & Jordan Murphy are there to tag him for a big loss. Whistle at the snap, they moved, move'em back 5. Sean Flores & Dakota Summer corral the dive up the middle & it's 3rd & 14. The runner starts left, picking his way looking for a seam, but Murphy has him from behind with a Blake Riley assist to make it 4th & 16. They get the punt away & the Lions offense will start at their 15.
Lions ball at the 30 & Gaskin fakes the give left to the motion & gives it to Cody Beal on the dive, nice run, 2nd & an inch. Beal thru the right side of the line, cuts left & pushes it out to our 49, first down! Gaskin with some excellent sleight of hand work fakes the pitch, fakes the inside hand off & give it to Trae White slanting thru on the other side for a gain of 7. Sean Flores takes it thru the right side of the line, Go, 1st down at the WC 30. Sean takes the ball around left end, has one Eagle to beat, gets the 1st down at the 15! Cody Beal takes the quick hitter inside, finds a seam right & scores! The Lions try a 2-point conversion, but the score stays at 27-6.
The Lions defense smothers the War Eagles offense until they turn it over on downs & Derek Easley finishes it with the Victory Knee to keep it a 27-6 final.
The Lions will open the regular season at home on Friday, August 21st against the McKenzie Rebels. Let's all get there & yell for our Lions as they open the 2009 schedule.
GO LIONS!
