Evans signs with Bethel University
15 Oct 2010

Former Camden Lady Lions Softball Coach Stacy Baker presided over a press conference called in the CHS library recently to announce the signing of Shelby Evans with the Bethel University Lady Wildcats. Shelby will join another former Lady Lion, Leah Hensley at Bethel & help break in the new softball complex that has been completed. Coach Baker reviewed Shelby's strong stats that she was able to accumulate as the Lady Lions ran thru district, region, and state championship series competition to win the State Championship with the 2010 Lady Lions team.
Some stat highlights are:
A batting average that was in the .400 - .450 range thru the regular season & only dipped to the final .396 even after facing strong pitchers in the region, state, and championship run
61 hits (over 50 is good!)
18 doubles, 8 home runs, 42 scored runs and scored 50 times herself
Slugging percentage of 700
Voted 1st team All West Tennessee, even with very limited play against West Tennessee teams!

Lady Lions Head Coach Laura Roberts also commended Shelby on her accomplishments last season. "This is a great opportunity for her", Coach Roberts added, "if she will treat is well, she has a chance to have four great years." Bethel's Head Softball Coach Larry Geraldi represented Bethel at the signing & talked about his teams' future. "We only have two seniors that will be leaving openings next year, but we will have five seniors on the team when Shelby gets there." Coach Geraldi was very complementary of the work ethic the Camden girls have exhibited at the next level. He was looking forward to working with a tremendous athlete like Shelby & was excited about how her bat might fit into his offensive scheme. Shelby intends to major in chemistry at Bethel.
Coach Baker had one more surprise up his sleeve for Shelby. After the announcement of the signing, he told the story of the home run that Shelby hit in the State Championship series that broke the back of the Covington team in the 6th inning. That swing also broke Shelby's favorite bat & Baker pined that "It sure would be nice to know where that bat is right now...". He then presented Shelby with the broken bat mounted on a plaque!
Congratulations to Shelby & her family as she plans to play softball at Bethel!
GO LADY LIONS!
