Lions win two at Christmas Tournament

The Camden Lions Basketball team was victorious in two games played in the 2002 First Bank Christmas Classic held in Lexington during the holiday break. Camden defeated Scotts Hill 57-41 on the 27th. It was close early as Camden led 18-16 after the first period and 30-26 at the half. After the break, we all learned "speed kills" as Camden's speed started taking it's toll, The Black & Gold used their supply of "fresh legs" off the bench to keep the pace up. Brandon Sims tipped a shot in with 4:19 showing in the third to make it 36-29, and Big Mo' was wearing Black & Gold! Jarrod Bain pumped up the crowd shortly after with a two-handed slam and followed it seconds later with a steal and a reverse dunk! Brock Martin had a steal and a lay-up to end the 3rd period to make it 42-32. Camden made their free throws late, and cruised to a 57-41 victory.

Scoring for Camden was:

Brock Martin 24
Ben Reed 14
Jarrod Bain 12
Josh Boyd 3
Brandon Sims 2
Brian French 2

Camden came back on Saturday, December 28th with a 43-34 victory over the University School of Jackson Bruins. USJ fought hard with quick passes and some dead-eye 3-pointers to keep the score dead even at the half, 24 all. Coach Barry Martin had the right words in the locker room, as the third period surge belonged to the Lions. Camden cranked up the defensive pressure and was able to hold USJ to only 3 points while scoring 8! The Bruins came storming back and it was close late, Camden only had a 5 point lead (39-34) with 2:39 left in the game. With 26 seconds showing, Brock Martin made two free throws to seal it and give the Lions a 41-34 lead. As time expired, Jarrod Bain passed to Ben Reed, and his lay-up made it 43-34 for the final.

Scoring was:

Brock Martin 22
Jarrod Bain 10
Ben Reed 9
Kyle Harris 2

The tournament was sponsored by First Bank, who donated prizes that were given away throughout the weekend. Thanks to everyone at First Bank for a great tournament. We look forward to it only getting bigger every year!
