Camden suffers Homecoming loss to Adamsville, 32-29
The Camden Lions lost a close one to the Adamsville Cardinals Friday night
in a Region game. Both teams displayed a lot of offense and poise thruout
the hard-fought game, but Camden was unable to score in an exciting last
minute drive down Wright Field.
It was Homecoming 2002 for the Lions with the Court being crowned before the
game. Senior quarterback Ben Tinkle escorted second maid Porscha McLin.
Sophomore guard John Hodge escorted first maid Sandra Farmer. The 2002
Homecoming Queen Sandi Hensley was escorted by Senior tight end Daniel
Woodall. Thanks to everyone who helped make the ceremony possible and
Congrats to Sandi and her Court!
We won the toss & deferred until the second half, and Clay Carruth kicked it
deep into the left corner of Wright Field. The returner made it to the 23
before Daniel Woodall led the stop. The Lions defense took the field and
was ready to do a little bird huntin’. The Cardinal runner made the left
edge, but Ryne Haynie was able to trip him up to make it 2nd & 3. The quick
dive over left guard is met by Kyle Moore, Justin Smith, and Shawn French to
make it 3rd & 1…no, they measure and it is a first down on their 34. Run
left is met by Moore and Heath Yoder after a pickup of only 2 feet. The
Cardinal QB rolls right, and Shane Corbitt is able to shed his blocker and
sack him for a loss of 7! Great play! They think pass again, but Yoder and
Brian Markham are there in coverage, and Brian comes down with the
football! Interception Black & Gold!
The offense starts it up with a first down at our 47. The “home run” throw
from Ben Tinkle to Daniel Woodall just missed, 2nd & 10. Josh Boyd takes
the handoff and starts into the left side of the line, then bounces it
outside for a pickup of 7. Boyd again, this time right, makes a great cut
and accelerates, then waits for a great downfield block to sprint to the
26! First down Lions! Yoder in motion right to left, makes the corner and
bangs it down to the 17. The fake to Ryne Haynie and give to Yoder is
covered well, and it’s a loss of two. Boyd in motion makes the corner, cut
inside, then cut to the sideline and it’s a Lions first down at the 6!
Haynie in motion, but they are watchin’ Josh, so Ryne takes the ball into
the left side of the endzone for six points! Touchdown Lions! Clay
Carruth’s right toe was on “preheat”, and the extra point kick is ‘way
good! With 6:44 showing, Camden is up 7-0.
Clay bangs the ball deep centerfield, and Maurice Gastelum is able to make
the stop at their 26. The Cards offense takes the ball and mounts a ten
play scoring drive. The Lions defense is up to the two-point play, and
great pressure on the QB makes him run for his life and throw the ball
away. Camden leads 7-6 with 2:24 showing in the first.
Josh Boyd takes the kick and moves the whole stack of players forward before
he is stopped at our 38! Great run! The delay draw to Josh and a screen
left never get rollin’, and it is 3rd &9. Ben Tinkle drops back and spots
Ryne Haynie draggin’ across from left to right wide open. The throw is
good, the catch is on the run, and Ryne makes it 4th & eleven inches. We
line it up, motion, they just can’t stand it and the offside flag makes it a
Lions first down at their 47 with 1:05 left in the first chunk. Haynie
picks up two then Josh Boyd slides thru about three would-be tacklers and
makes another first down at their 37! Yoder takes the handoff from Tinkle
for a quick hit into the line, then spots some running room outside to the
right, slows for a block and is finally stopped at the 20! Great run! The
first quarter is up, 12 minutes is reset, change ends, but the Lions are
still thinking SCORE!
A fumble and a Josh Boyd run over left tackle leaves it 3rd & 13 and the
Lions need a big play. Ryne Haynie and Ben Tinkle have one ready! The
offensive line gives ‘em time, and Ben Tinkle throws it deep. Ryne Haynie
is covered, but goes up for the jump ball, unties the Cardinals pants, and
comes down with the ball! Haynie makes another Cardinal miss, and is
finally downed at the two! Great play! Adamsville is trying to watch Boyd
and Yoder and Haynie, so Josh Guajardo gets the call and follows the blocks
of the right side of the offensive line for a touchdown! Clock has 10:11
showing, Daniel Woodall fires the snap, Brian Markham has the hold, and Clay
Carruth bangs it through to make it Lions 14, Cards 6.
Clay kicks it back to Adamsville and their runner makes it to 34 before Josh
Guajardo and Brandon Pierpoint are able to snag a foot. Their big back,
Todd Hockaday starts left, but Maurice Gastelum and John Hodge throw him
down after five. Hockaday right, juggles, the handoff, and that’s just
enough distraction to allow Maurice and Daniel Woodall to bang him down hard
for a loss of 2. The Card QB tries the keeper, but Maurice and Dennis Will
wrap him up after only 3. Great stop Lions, and they are punting it away!
Ryne Haynie takes the ball and is able to make the left sideline and GO! A
cut back to the right and a huge second effort makes it first down Camden on
our 34. A slick 8-yard run by Josh Boyd is not enough to get the offense
crankin’, so with 6:15 showing, Tinkle’s punt is away. The Adamsville back
bust thru coverage and is able to get all the way to our 48. Five plays
later their QB dives in for a TD, but the Black and Gold defensive line
makes another great play on the two-point conversion attempt led by Kyle
Moore and Heath Yoder! 3:32 left in the half and Camden is still up 14-12.
The Lions offense starts at our 44 after an exciting run back by Josh
Guajardo. The Cardinals defense has all the answers, and we have to punt it
back to them with 2:20 left. It rolls dead at their 23, but it must have
been just enough room, as the first play is a pass along the right side line
that goes all the way for 6. The pass is complete for two, and with 1:54
left in the half it’s 18-14 their way.
Josh Boyd carries the kick to the 32, but the Lions offense can’t get a
first down, and with 26 seconds left, we kick it away. Heath Yoder hustles
down to cover the kick, and is there to recover the fumble! Lions ball at
their 38! Two incomplete pass attempts are exciting, but not enough to
capitalize, and both teams head for the field house with the Cards up by four.
The Camden band shows off their West Side Story show for the Homecoming
crowd, and they kick it short and left to Josh Guajardo. Josh tears up the
right sideline for a great runback to our 40! Josh Boyd makes the left end
corner, and the cut back allows him to show off some great open field
running and end up with a first down at their 36! Good job Lions! Heath
Yoder’s turn, and he carries two tacklers with him to the 30! The Cards
have Boyd covered and it is a loss of one. Yoder bangs the middle, jumps
over a pile of bird feathers, and carries three tacklers to the 19 for
another first down! 9:50 showing and Boyd gets four. The Cards get a sack
on Tinkle, and we jump on 2nd down, so it’s suddenly 3rd & 13 back at the
22. Tinkle gives the ball to Ryne Haynie and he slants left before he is
hit by two Cards, spins, drives, and scores! 8:56 left in the third, and
Carruth drives the ball thru the middle to make it 21-20 Camden!
The out of bounds kick gives them a start at the 35, and 13 plays later, the
QB dives in for 6. They go for two…again…but Dennis Will and Shane Corbitt
combine to chase the QB down to force the throw away. 3:12 left in the
third and Adamsville is up 26-21.
Guajardo makes another nice return to our 39, and the Lions offense has to
answer. Boyd starts right, cuts back left, hits the burners and is finally
stopped at their 42! Nice run! Yoder takes the ball up the middle, adds a
spin move, and drives for another first down at the 32! Great run! Haynie
is able to push forward for two. An incomplete pass makes it 3rd & 8, but
Boyd is able to take the handoff and sprint around right end and finish
tough by running over two Cardinals to make a first down at the 12! Jesse
Leonard hits the middle for no gain. Josh Boyd in motion right to left,
takes the handoff from Tinkle and beats them all into the left corner of the
endzone for a score! We are going to two, Yoder in motion, takes the
handoff and finds paydirt for two! 34 seconds left in the third, Camden is
up 29-26!
Carruth bangs it deep enough that Yoder and Haynie can put the Card runner
down at the 26. The Adamsville runner is able to make the left corner and
go, but Brock Martin is there to sling him out of bounds at the 37. Haynie
pushes a Card receiver out after a gain of 4. The Adamsville QB starts
right, but Daniel Woodall blitzes and sticks him after only two. It’s the
end of the third, and as the runner starts left, Heath Yoder is in the
backfield slowing him up. Maurice wants some of that, and they drop him to
make it 4th &2 at the 46. The Card QB follows his left guard on a gutsy
call, and they make the first down at midfield. As the QB starts from
center, Dennis Will dives to hang onto his foot for a great play! Will and
Gastelum combine to make it 3rd & 9. The QB drops back, and has a man open
in the right flat, but Ryne Haynie plays a great centerfield, and comes down
with the ball! Great play…but a flag in the backfield on us makes it a Card
first down at our 35. Tough deal… It’s the Hockermeister running to the
left, and Maurice and Boyd have to combine to make a stop at the 25, first
down. Shane Corbitt, Will, and Shawn French combine for sack on the
Cardinal QB ‘way back at the 29. The Cardinal QB rolls right, throws over
the middle, it’s tipped and in the air, and Maurice Gastelum comes down with
it! 8:21 left in the fourth and it’s a Lions first down at the 24!
Heath Yoder is in motion left, takes the first down handoff and sprints thru
the Adamsville defense all the way to their 30-yard line! A 46-yard run!
Boyd gets two up the middle. The double handoff has Boyd giving it to
Haynie, and he gets all the way to the Cards 12 before they are able to put
him down! 7:03 left to play and Josh Boyd is able to run for six yards.
Boyd has a rare loss on 2nd down, and we call a time out. Yoder dives over
right tackle and it is 4th & 3, 5:05 left. Boyd gets the high-pressure
handoff, and the offensive line does that blocking thing which allows him to
make a first down at the five!
Boyd carries for one. He then gets the second down handoff and is
immediately hit in the backfield. A huge second effort moves it up to a
loss of only one. We line it up, they jump, no flag, and we take a timeout
to talk it over with 5:39 left. Yoder dives over the stack and its 4th &
goal on the three. We are going for it, and Boyd slants into the line, but
is stopped short and the ball goes over on downs. Adamsville mounts a
thirteen-play drive mixing up passes and runs and the QB dives in for the
score with 1:13 showing. The two-point attempt ends with the QB stopped
short, and it is a 32-29 game. The Lions mount one last charge, led by Josh
Boyd’s excellent kick return to the midfield stripe. Josh takes a screen
pass and carries to the 30, but a flag moves it back to the 45. Boyd again
to the 35, and with 47 seconds left Josh takes the handoff and makes the
25-yard line! Ben Tinkle has to spike it to stop the clock, and we have it
2nd & 10. An illegal procedure flag moves us back, and the striped ones put
time back to show 32 seconds. Two incomplete passes finish it off, and the
Cardinals QB ends it with a knee.
The Lions played hard & never quit in a hard-fought game. Congrats to
everyone on their strong effort thruout the whole game!
The Lions travel to Dresden on the 25th for an out of Region game. Let’s
all make the trip to Dresden to pull for the Black & Gold!
