Huntingdon Mustangs over the CHS Lions, 57-19
The Camden Lions dropped a tough Region game to
Huntingdon in the Thursday night “Tornado Bowl” played at Wright Field. The possibility of a
Friday night wash out due to the remnants Hurricane Lillie caused the game to be rescheduled
for Thursday. The Camden Quarterback Club hosted the Annual Spaghetti Supper before the game.
We appreciate everyone that came out and supported the Lions football program!
The
1983 team returned to Wright Field and was honored in a pre-game ceremony. Barry Barnett
coached the team and Linda Phelps was the cheerleader sponsor. The 1983 team completed the
regular season with a 9-1 record, then played in and won the St. Jude Bowl game against
South Fulton 32 – 19. Click here for pictures.
Ben Tinkle, Daniel Woodall, Ryne Haynie,
and Shane Corbitt met the officials and the Mustang game captains at midfield for the toss.
The ‘Stangs won it and deferred, and Clay Carruth teed it up. The onside kick is
covered, and it’s Huntingdon’s first and ten at our 49. The officials add a flag before
the snap, and the Lions offsides penalty makes it 1st & 5. They open with a screen
right, but Kyle Moore and Shawn French cover him up after a pick up of 3. The big back
slides off of right tackle and sprints all the way to our 32, first down. With 10:47
left in the first, the quick back starts left, but Ryne Haynie and Josh Guajardo string
him out to the sideline, and it is a loss of one. Same runner left for six, with Josh
Boyd, Shane Corbitt, Heath Yoder, and Josh Guajardo put him down at the 30. The third
back thru the hole in the middle has the ball, and it is a first down at the 15. Corbitt
and Brian Markham combine to stop the back along the right sideline after five. Handoff
over left guard makes it 3rd & 1, and the quarterback keeps it on fourth down for the
score. The kick is good, and with 9:16 showing, the score is ‘Stangs 7, Lions 0.
The Huntingdon kicker drilled the ball into the end zone, so Camden starts at the 20.
Josh Boyd is in motion left to right, gets the handoff from Ben Tinkle, makes a good cut
at right end, and picks up 5. The second down pass is incomplete. Third down flag for
an illegal shift is declined, and Tinkle is punting it away. It takes a Huntingdon
bounce, and they start at our 35.
The Lions defense is able to stop the double
handoff after a pickup of 7. The little back takes the handoff and sprints over left end
for the score. The kick misses, and with 6:01 left in the first, they are up by 13.
Josh Guajardo handles the kick, and makes a great runback to our 31. It’s a
first down jailbreak, and Boyd is swarmed as he gets the handoff, loss of 3. Ben Tinkle
rolls out left looking to pass, no one is open, and he tucks it away and gets three yards.
The third down call is the naked boot to the left, and it is 4th & 5. Ben Tinkle punts
it away, Shane Corbitt and Ryne Hayniac combine to drill him at their 46, and the
Lions defense has to come up with a stop.
Kyle Moore and Heath Yoder nail him
after a pick up of 8 over right guard. Heath talks John Hodge into meeting him in the
Huntingdon backfield and it’s a loss of one. 2:13 left in the first, and Yoder
convinces Josh Guajardo that it was fun, and they combine for another loss of one.
4th & 5 and the ‘Stangs are punting. It hits in the end zone, and the Lions start
at the 20 with 1:13 left in the first. Yoder follows Jeremy Stokes’ block for a
gain of 3. Haynie is in motion, takes the handoff and is stopped at the corner for
a loss. Ryne takes the 3rd down handoff up the middle, but he is met by a herd of
Mustangs, and it is time to punt. The snap goes too high, and Tinkle alertly kicks
it out of the end zone for a safety to save the touchdown. The score is 15-0 with
11:13 left before the break.
Ben bangs the free kick from the 20, and Boyd
takes a great “outside-in” route that allows him to cut the returner down at their
38! Great tackle! The Huntingdon QB sprints left, and Maurice Gastelum and Shawn
French combine for the stop after a pick up of 8. The big back takes the handoff
and slants right and suddenly he is all alone in the Lions backfield. Yoder cuts
his legs out and he has the first down at our 44. Time out ‘Stangs to think it
over, and it must have worked…the QB throws it in the right flat and the receiver
speeds down the right sideline and scores. The kick is good and it is 22 – zip.
Josh Boyd fields the kick, and makes a great kick return to the 30. We start
with an illegal procedure flag to spot them 5. Yoder gets the call and picks up 4
before he hangs a Mustang on his shoelace. 8:30 showing and Ben Tinkle drops back
and hits a wide-open Ryne Haynie behind the defenders and he scores, Touchdown
Lions! It’s a 72-yard pass & catch, great job! Carruth bangs the kick up, but the
left upright is all wrong and it’s no good. With 8:07 showing it’s 22-6. Clay
trys the onside kick, but the ‘Stangs cover it at their 45. Five plays later,
they score. The kick is good and with 5:26 left, its 29-6.
Josh Guajardo fields the kick and runs to
the 30. Yoder runs for a first down at our 43. Boyd bangs the middle for one. Josh starts
left, but Huntingdon has it covered and it is a loss of 4. Ben Tinkle’s pass to Haynie is
just barely too long, and Ben is punting it away. The Lions defense gives ground slowly, but
they are able to score with no time left in the half. The kick is good, and it is 36-6 at
the half.
The Huntingdon band performs at half and Bryce Wilbanks returns the
Huntingdon kick to the 30. The Lions offense comes out determined, and starts a sixteen play
scoring drive. Yoder over the middle for 6. Tinkle throws to Gastelum, and it’s a first
down at our 40! Double handoff ends up with Maurice carrying for a first down at midfield!
Guajardo makes the corner at right end for 4. Later, the 4th down pass from Ben Tinkle to
Mathew Chandler goes down the right sideline for a first down at their 33. With 5:33 left in
the third, Tinkle drops back, looks left, and then throws right to Daniel Woodall. Woodall
makes two miss down the left sideline, and is finally pushed out at the 16. A flag adds
five, and it is a Black & Gold first down at the Huntingdon 11! Ben gets sacked twice before
Josh Boyd runs up the middle to make it 4th & 13. Time out Lions…
4:10 left, Tinkle
drops back and throws the fade to Brian Markham in the right corner of the end zone, its
incomplete, but the refs’ flag tells it all, defensive pass interference! That gives the
Lions an automatic first down at the six. Ben hands it to Josh Boyd, and he slants behind
the blocks of Hodge, Beasley, and Stokes for a Black & Gold touchdown! Go for the two-point
conversion, and the pass to Woodall just misses, and with 3:09 left in the 3rd, its HHS 36,
Lions 12. It takes a kick off and three plays for Huntingdon to score, and the kick goes
thru with 1:43 showing, 42-12.
They kick it out of bounds, and we start at
the 35. The Lions offense can’t get started, and they run the punt back to score.
The third quarter clock runs out on the PAT, and it’s 50-12. Bryce Wilbanks returns
the kick to our 40. A first down fumble is recovered by Huntingdon, and seven plays
later, they score to make it 57-12. Bryce takes the kick to the 16, and Brian
Markham revs the Lions up to start a nine play scoring drive. Jesse Leonard carries
up the middle for five yards and a first down. Bryce Wilbanks turns the corner on
left end, and the Lions have a first down at the Huntingdon 44! Leonard for four.
Markham spots Gastelum open, and passes the ball for 6. The 4th & 2 call goes to
Jesse, and it’s a Black & Gold first down at the 34!Leonard slides thru the middle
and makes a great run in traffic for 9. Markham gives it to Josh Guajardo and Josh
makes three ‘Stangs miss on left end and he scores! Carruth finds the middle, and
with 24 seconds left, it’s a 57-19 game.
Clay kicks it right at the left
sideline, and the returner steps out as he fields the ball. Huntingdon runs the
victory play at the 14, and it’s the ball game.
The Lions travel to Jackson
Christian School Friday night for a non-regional game. Let’s all support the Black
& Gold and help cheer them on to victory! View the Photo Gallery HERE.
