Football Game Highlights
McKenzie over Camden 28-17 in Region Opener
The Camden Lions traveled to the McKenzie Stadium for their first regional
battle of the 2002 season and fought the Rebs to a tough loss, 28-17.
McKenzie won the toss and deferred, so our game captains, Shaun Borchert,
Jason Coleman, and Brock Martin took the ball. The kick was to Ryne Haynie
at the 10, and he ran hard to the 30 where the Lions offense would start
with a first down. Senior Quarterback Ben Tinkle came out throwing, and
Haynie had two steps on his coverage while running a deep route…but the pass
fell incomplete. Josh Boyd took the handoff from Tinkle and slants right
for a pickup of 6. Heath Yoder tries the right side and is stopped just
short of the first, 4th & 1. The coaches decide to punt, and Tinkle hits it
good to the 22. The runner moves thru heavy traffic & is finally hauled
down ‘way up at our 47.
The McKenzie Rebels come out running, and the quick hitter over the middle
goes for 3 where Shaun French leads the stop. The Rebel tailback slants off
left tackle, and Daniel Woodall is able to stop him two feet short of the
first down. The striped ones confirm with the chains, and McK busts the
right side and scores from the 36. McK lines up for the old “trick play”,
you know, with the center way over here & everybody else…well, you had to be
there, but it was ugly & Daniel Woodall put the quarterback to the turf. It
was 6-0 Rebs with 8:41 left in the first.
Josh Boyd took the kick at the 18, made the left sideline and made it all
the way to the 48, great run! Josh Guajardo starts in motion, left to
right, and the Rebel tackler used Josh’s facemask for the stop, so the
Zebra’s say “First down Camden at our 48”. Heath Yoder busts the middle for
a tough pickup of one. Boyd takes the inside handoff, breaks out of
traffic, grabs one more gear and makes the 18 before he is stopped! Great
28 yard run! Haynie tries the end around for a pickup of 1. After an
incomplete pass, the quarterback keeper gets Tinkle around right end and
downfield to the 11. 6:25 left, Josh Guajardo is in motion and only gets a
fake handoff so that Josh Boyd can get an “original Ben Tinkle” handoff and
slant behind Josh Beasley’s block all the way to the 5! Great play, Lions!
The Rebels are rattled, and take a timeout to talk with 2nd down and one at
the two-yard line. McKenzie comes back with the right defense called, and
Tinkle is hit in the backfield for a loss. Ben lines it up, looks it over,
and shows a “T” to the ref, Black & Gold timeout. 5:32 on the clock, the
double handoff results in a loss, so sophomore kicker Clay Carruth in on the
field for his first field goal attempt of the season. Brian Markham has the
hold, Clay has it up and it is good! The ball is over the fence and on
someone’s patio, and the score is McK 6, Camden 3.
Carruth is pumped, and his kick is fielded inside the 20. The returner
finds a seam, but Ryne Haynie is able to run him down at the 41. Run over
right tackle is finally stopped a foot short of the first…no wait, they
measure it as a first down McK. The next play is a pass that had Josh
Guajardo in the QB’s face as he threw, and Brian Markham almost
intercepting, good job defense! The Rebel runner ran a delay-kind-of-draw
over the right side of the line, and Kyle Moore lead the stop after a pickup
of 4. Right side again for four, and it is 4th & 1. Rebs going for it,
bust the middle, have it…no wait, yellow hankie says five yard penalty all
over it, and it is 4th & 5 at the 43 with 2:20 in the first. They are still
going for it, and it is that delay again, and it’s a first down at the 35.
Justin Smith and Maurice Gastelum get together for a little Rebel dropping
party, and it is 2nd & 9-1/2 yards, great stop! Smitty stops the run over
right tackle after a gain of a half. 30 seconds left, and the Rebel runner
slants over the middle, gets lost in traffic, and busts out of the pack for
a TD. The pitch right makes the end zone and it is 14-3 Rebels.
Daniel Woodall fields the short kick, and pushes it up the left sideline to
the 31. Boyd gets stopped, and the first quarter runs out. Josh has no
where to go again, Tinkle’s rollout turns into a sack, and he is punting.
Heath Yoder just missed the returner, and he’s finally stopped at our 41.
The Rebs start a nine play drive mixing runs and two passes to score with
6:03 showing. The kick is good, and it is 21-3 their way.
Maurice Gastelum runs the short kick up to the 31. Haynie takes the 2nd
handoff and pushes for two. Tinkle throws the left screen to Ryne, he makes
two miss, and makes a first down at the 42! Great pass, catch, and run!
Boyd inside makes ‘em miss and gets seven yards. Yoder’s turn, and it is a
Lions first down at the 29! With 4:07 showing, the Lions front line is fired
up, and Boyd cuts up the right side for 4. Yoder busts the middle for 3.
An incomplete pass slows the Lions, and the Rebels contribute with an
offsides call to make it a Lions first down on the 17. Tinkle starts right,
hands it to Boyd headed d’uther way, and Josh makes it 2nd & 6. Less than 90
seconds left in the half, and Yoder slides around right end to the 10.
Yoder again, Josh Beasley holds his block, and it’s a first down inside the
5. Boyd gets two around left end before he is hit hard. With 45 seconds
before the break, Ben Tinkle takes the snap & beats them all to the right
pylon, touchdown Lions! Brian Markham has the hold, Clay Carruth has the
leg, and its 21-10. The Lions kick coverage breaks down & the Rebs run it
in for six. Tough break for the Black & Gold! Kick is good, and the Lions
go into the half with the score 28-10.
Both bands perform at half, and we kick it away. The Lions kick coverage
stops him at the 38. Big blitz on, and the runner slides by for 7 yards
before Yoder and Gastelum make the stop. The Black & Gold defense plans a
meeting in the McKenzie backfield and it is attended by Daniel Woodall,
Shane Corbitt, and Heath Yoder for a loss of 4. Great play, Lions! A rare
McK pass is good for a first down at our 49. Justin Smith leads a stop with
help from Kyle Moore and Shane to make it 2nd & 6 on our 47. A big Rebel
back makes it to the right sideline and is able to make it 1st down on the
15, McK threatening…
As the handoff goes to the left, Josh Guajardo is there to snare the back,
and Kyle Moore assists in dropping him for a loss. The Rebels have passing
in mind, and Brian Markham is able to break it up, 3rd &11. Try again, and
this time Brian is able to intercept in the end zone, Lions ball on the 20!
The Lions start a nine play scoring drive that includes first down runs by
Ryne Haynie, Josh Boyd, and Ben Tinkle. With 4:37 showing, Josh takes the
inside handoff from Tinkle, is hit in traffic, makes a huge second effort,
breaks free and burns the McKenzie field for a 46 yard touchdown! Clay
Carruth had his toe in the warmer, and boots it thru the gap to make it 28-17.
The kick return is stopped on the 18, and the Lions defense goes to work.
The Lions are up to the task and grind the Rebs to a halt after nine plays.
Ten seconds left in the third, and Shawn French flushes the QB so that
Justin Smith can lead a pack of Lions in for a sack! With 4th & 20 on the
39, it’s the end of the third. The Rebel punter had to be wheeled into the
game for their first punt of the night, and it rolled out at the 11.
Camden’s five-play drive grinds down, and Tinkle punts it to midfield. The
Lions defense is able to stop ‘em with tough play. With 4th & 7, they throw
an incomplete pass covered by Keith Leslie, and it is our ball on the 19.
An interception gives them the ball on our 45, but five plays later, they
punt it away…twice. First one gets the Canary Cloth treatment for a
five-yard offside penalty. Back it up, the second punt rolls into the end
zone, and the Black & Gold team starts on the 20 with only three minutes left.
The Lions offense is ready, they aren’t and they burn a time out. Ben
Tinkle throws a long pass to Brock Martin and he catches it just as he is
hit, and he drops it, no wait…he has it, then it drops for an incomplete.
Too close…. Screen pass right for no gain. Brock Martin sprints down the
right sideline & Ben Tinkle hits him at our 40 for a huge gain! Great
connection! Brock makes the 34 before he is stopped, and it is first down
Lions with only 2:39 left. The drive stops at the 34 and after an
incomplete pass it is McK’s ball. The defense forces another punt, but a
personal foul on the punter gives them the ball to run out the clock and
Camden takes a hard fought and tough loss back home.
The Lions home opener will be next Friday, 13 September at Wright Field.
There will be a special ceremony to remember all of the 11 September 2001
