Riverside defeats Camden 28-0

The Camden Lions traveled to Parsons to meet the Panthers on a rain-threatening night, and suffered a Region 6-AA shutout, 28-0. All of the Riverside Homecoming activities were cancelled for the night due to the rain, but the field looked to be sound as game captains Brock Martin, Shaun Borchert, and Jason Coleman met the Panthers at midfield. They won & deferred, and the Black & Gold lined up ready to receive. The kick was deep to Josh Boyd, and he was able to make the 26 before he was tackled and it’s first down Lions!

Boyd takes the handoff from Ben Tinkle, makes left end but slips on the cut and loses 2. Ryne Haynie is in motion right to left, grabs the handoff and is able to get one. A fumble under center seals the drive, and we are punting. Riverside starts at our 21, and a pitch left gets to our 11 where Matthew Chandler, Josh Guajardo, and Jason Coleman meet it. The 2nd & 5 play starts over left tackle and ends in the endzone, TD Panthers. The kick is good, and with 9:37 showing in the first, its 7-0 their way.

Ryne Haynie takes the kick and slides left to the 33. Heath Yoder busts the middle for two yards. Boyd is stuffed for no gain. The screen pass right is a bust, and with 4th & 15, we punt it to midfield. The Lions defense cranks down hard, and Woodall leads a pack of Lions to stop the first down run over left tackle for no gain. Dennis Will, Daniel Woodall, Justin Smith, and John Hodge meet the run right after a pick up of 5. The Panther QB has pass on his mind, rolls out right, thinks run, and is met by Hodge, Will and Woodall who quickly press him into the soft Decatur County turf, 4th & 4. Nice stop, Defense!

Haynie takes the punt and is finally run out at our 23. Yoder carries straight up the middle for 3. A long pass attempt is intercepted, and they start at our 40. Five plays later, the Panthers score, kick is good, and with 2:02 left in the first, its 14-0 Riverside.

Boyd fields the kick and he is hit hard, but he isn’t down. His second effort gets us a first down at our 31! The Lions offense can’t get its claws into the ground, and the punt is away. The Panther returner starts right, but a great save by Maurice Gastelum puts him down. The Panthers start a nine-play scoring drive to end the quarter with the score 21-0 Riverside.

Josh Boyd fields the kick and sprints to the 31. The Panthers swarm Camden’s offense, and the out of bounds punt is marked at our 32. Camden has to have a stop, but a little “too-eager-twitch” causes an offside flag on us. The runner starts over right end, Kyle Moore and Maurice Gastelum are waiting, no gain. It’s a QB roll out right, but Shane Corbitt has him in his sights, and SACKS him back at the 31! Try a roll out left, and it is Heath Yoder there to put him down again! Great stop defense, and the punt is away. It’s a low roller, but Haynie is able to scoop it up and make it back to the Riverside 39.

The Panthers defense crank it up one notch, our fourth down attempt is incomplete, and they start at their 36 with 1:02 left in the half. They are able to get one first down, but their “hurry up” doesn’t hurry, and we are into the locker room for the half down by three TD’s.

Brock Martin goes to midfield and does his best to try to talk them out of the ball, but the striped ones won’t give, and Clay Carruth sends it flying. Their big back breaks thru coverage, and Brock is finally able to knock him out of bounds at our 24. Five plays later, they are in the end zone, and the kick makes it 28-0.

Boyd fields the kick and makes the 30 with some great moves on a wet track. The first down play results in a fumble that is recovered by them, and the Black & Gold defense goes back to work. They help with an offside conviction, and it is 1st & 15. Gastelum and John Hodge meet the middle run after a pick up of 4. Sprint to the left sideline looks too good, but Justin Smith chases him down at the 32 & makes a great stop! An incomplete pass makes it 4th & 8, but they are going for it…

The center screen start off looking ‘way too good, but Gastelum stays at home and drops the receiver at the 32, First Down Lions! 6:05 left in the third, Boyd slides off of right tackle for a first down at the 41! Great play! The drive is stopped by Riverside, and we punt it to their 35. A run up the middle looks like “TD”, but the yellow hankie says “Holding”, so it all turns into first and ten on their 45…I don’t know how…

Justin Smith puts some “pop” into a stop and it is 2nd &1. We jump, and Riverside gets the first down. The third quarter ends after a Daniel Woodall stop. Moore stops the runner for the first play of the final chunk, and it is 3rd & 10 at the 35. A whole pack of Lions make the next stop, and it is 4th & 7. They punt it out at the 15, and the Lions offense is back at work. Gastelum carries for 6. Yoder busts the middle for 3. Boyd sweeps left end, barely makes the corner, but it’s a first down Lions! Boyd dives for 3. Yoder is stopped for no gain. Ben Tinkle rolls right and hits Daniel Woodall in the right flat. Daniel tucks the ball away, then it slides out, but Woodall gets it back & it’s a first down at their 49. Yoder carries for 2. The throw into the left flat is intercepted, and it’s Panther’s ball at their 36.

The Black & Gold stands tough for the stop, and they punt it away to Josh Boyd. Boyd makes the 20, but a flagrant facemask call moves it ‘way out to our 45! Only 2:30 left in the game, and Boyd dives into the stack for a pick up of 2. They call a time out…for some reason unknown to man, and Boyd carries again to make it 3rd & 6. Josh Guajardo carries on the sweep left, but a pack of Panthers are waiting, and it is 4th & 9 on our 46. Tinkle passes to Gastelum and he is rolled out of bounds at their 48, just short of the first, and the ball goes over on downs. A “win-the-game” play finishes it all up, and Camden loses a tough Regional game 28-0.

The Lions host the Bruceton Tigers next Friday night. Bring out a loud and noisy crowd next Friday and let’s all yell for the Lions!

GO LIONS!
