Game Highlights for Waverly, 21-0
The Camden Lions traveled across the water and suffered a season opening
loss to Waverly in the annual “Battle for the Bridge”. Waverly ran over,
around, and thru the Lions for a 21-0 win.
The annual kickoff of the United Way campaign for both Counties highlighted
the pre-game ceremony. One of the Titans cheerleaders, Lindsey Bush, was
also on hand for pix with the Camden cheerleaders. Ryne Haynie, Shane
Corbitt, Daniel Woodall, and Ben Tinkle were the Game Captains for the
Lions. They met the Waverly captains and the refs at midfield for the coin
flip. Waverly got it right, deferred until the second half and we start
with the ball. Ryne Haynie took the kick and made it as far as the 27, but
a penalty moved it back to the 19 where Camden would start, first and ten.
Haynie made the slant over the middle look good for a pick up of six. Josh
Boyd sprinted to right end, but there was too much traffic, and only picked
up one, 3rd & 3. Ben Tinkle had the hard count and motion working to
perfection, and Waverly was flagged for their first of many “offside”
penalties, first down Lions at the 31!
Heath Yoder took the inside hand off and followed the blocks of Jeremy
Stokes and Josh Beasley for 6, great run! Josh Guajardo was hit hard on the
corner, and his second effort turned it into a “plus one”! Yoder busted the
middle on the third down play for six yards, but a 15-yard penalty on us
made it 1st & 10 at our 30. With 9:17 showing, Josh Boyd made the left
corner, thanked John Hodge for an excellent down field block, and made the
39, 2nd & 1. No wait, the spot says FIRST DOWN! Great play!
Yoder slants past a most excellent Jeremy Stokes block, found four Tigers to
run over and made it to our 49 for 2nd & 1. Give it to him again, Heath
pushes the stack for a first down! A penetrating Tiger got in the middle of
the sprint right, and it was a loss of 5. Senior QB Ben Tinkle faked the
handoff, rolled out to the right, and spotted Haynie on the crossing
pattern. Ryne hauled it in and made the first down on their 37! Air Lions
first down!
Heath Yoder carries two in a row to make it 3rd & 3. An incomplete pass
leaves the Black & Gold with 4th & 4 on about the 30, and 6:10 left in the
first. The Tigers get their cart in front, and the offside call gives us a
first down at the 26! Some of the magic juice dried up, and Ben Tinkle
recovers the fumble after a mix up in the backfield on the 30, 2nd & 14.
Boyd slants over the middle for 3, and it is 4th & 11…tough deal. The
Waverly Tigers contribute again with a offside flag, and it is 4th & 6.
They jump again, and it is 4th & 1! The Blue & White coaches call a time to
talk it over with 4:24 in the first. Camden comes back with a quarterback
keeper, and the front line of Josh Beasley, Jeremy Stokes, and Dennis Will
pushes the pile for a first down. The Tigers swarm Tinkle for a sack, 2nd &
15. Josh Boyd gets six around right end. The double handoff only gets two,
and it is 4th & 7…and we still have the ball with 3:15 left in the quarter.
Ben Tinkle throws the fade pass to the left pylon, and no one comes down
with the “jump ball”, and it is Waverly’s ball on the 12.
Waverly starts with a ground game that stretches over into the 2nd quarter
and grinds out big yards. Ten plays later, the result is 4th & 3 on our
29. Their running back was hit at the line, but he keeps digging and is
able to get in for six. The kick is good, and with 10:20 showing, it is 7-0
Waverly.
Josh Guajardo let the kick bounce once, then ran hard all the way to the
45! Great return! The offense couldn’t get their claws in the ground, and
Ben Tinkle punted it away. Brandon Pierpoint had that all figured out, and
made a big hit at the 30. The Lions defense was challenged quickly, as the
Waverly backs were in our backfield WAY too quickly…
Brian Markham saves a huge gain with a shoe string tackle, 2nd & 4. Another
quick hitter into the middle, and they have a first down at our 49. With
6:54 showing, it’s a Tiger time out. Daniel Woodall was in the backfield
and almost catches the back for a huge loss, but he is able to make it 2nd &
6 before Matthew Chandler and Heath Yoder stop him. Woodall is finally able
to catch up to the Tiger back way down at the 23, first down Waverly. With
6 minutes left in the half, Keith Leslie stops the back to make it 2nd & 6.
Chandler & Kyle Moore combine for the stop up the middle, but it is enough
for a Tiger first down at the 11. Pitch right is met by Yoder and Chandler
at the 5. The Waverly quarterback starts left, but Kyle Moore and Dennis
Will meet him in the backfield, and he is pressed to the turf at the 8.
Great play!
The Lions take a time out to talk it over, and Josh Beasley meets up with
Maurice Gastelum in time to drop the runner to make it 4th & 2. Big play up
next as Waverly lines up to go for it, Daniel Woodall splits the middle on
the blitz and Dennis Will delivers a huge stop in the Waverly back field to
make it our ball on the 8! The offense ran into some mad Tigers, and Ben
Tinkle had to punt it away. It rolls out of bounds at our 46 with 53 ticks
on the clock…not literally…that would be gross. The defense holds, and at
the half, Waverly is up by 7.
The Waverly runners just kept on coming, and yardage came in big hunks on
their first series of the third. With 7:30 left in the third, the inside
hand off went right, and the big back was able to cut into the end zone for
six. The kick split ‘em, and it was 14-0 Tigers. The short squirrelly kick
made it all the way back to Ryne Haynie, and he is able to push it up to the
16. Josh Boyd runs hard around right end, and it is a first down at the
26! Great blocking AND running, Lions! A pick up of 5 by Boyd is nullified
with a holding call, and it’s first and 20. The offense can’t dig their way
out, and Tinkle punts it down to their 44 where the Lions down the ball.
Waverly just keeps on running, and with 3:18 showing, they have a first down
at our 28. John Hodge & Heath Yoder meet the run over the middle after a
short gain, 2nd & 9. Josh Guajardo and Shawn French combine for a negative
“one”, and we have less than two minutes left, 3rd & 10. The Tiger back
sprinting around left end is met by Guajardo, the ball is loose, and it’s
Lions ball at the 19! Great stop defense!
The offense is slow getting started, and with 3rd & 15, Ben Tinkle completes
a strike to Matthew Chandler to make it 4th & 2 and end the quarter.
Waverly’s defense is up to the task, and the first play of the final chunk
makes it a Waverly first down on our 15. Two plays later, they score, kick
is good, and with 11:02 showing, they have 21.
Camden starts at the 16 after an illegal block penalty, and Brian Markham
gives the handoff to Josh Boyd for 6 yards. Yoder bangs the middle for a
tough yard, but it sets up Boyd’s sprint around left end all the way to the
29, first down Lions! Markham keeps it, and picks up about 3 before a late
hit by Waverly adds 15. Camden first down at our 43, just under 9 minutes
left. A reverse loses 8, but Markham takes the 2nd down handoff and hits a
slanting Ryne Haynie for a big gain all the way to their 40, first down
Lions. Heath Yoder slides off of Josh Beasley’s block, and picks up 5.
Guajardo squirts out of the middle for 8, but yet another holding call moves
it all back to the 40. Boyd in motion, right to left, grabs the handoff
from Markham, and darts to the 30 for a first down! The drive slowed, and
with 5:50 showing, it is 3rd & 9. Markham sells the screen play to
perfection, and Haynie makes it inside the 21 before he is rolled out of
bounds. 4th & 1, gotta’ go for it…
Josh Boyd answers the call, and with 5:44, it’s a Lions first down! The
Tigers defense cranked it up one more notch, and the QB sack on 4th down
gives them the ball on our 47. Waverly’s two starting backs continued to
run, and with 2:15 showing Woodall and Zack Brazzell were able to stop the
runner & shake the ball loose. Camden recovered at the 8. Haynie right for
3, Boyd left and a great cut, first down at the 37. Waverly intercepts, and
their starting backs are able to run three plays, and the clock out for a
Waverly win.
The Lions travel to McKenzie on September 6th for their first Regional game
of the year. Let’s all make the trip and support the Black & Gold! Go Lions!
