Game Highlights for West Carroll, 20-7

The 2002 Camden Lions started strong in their scrimmage at Paul Ward Stadium in Huntingdon Friday night, but the West Carroll War Eagles were able to finish strong with a 20-7 win over Camden.

A huge crowd was on hand in spite of the drizzling rain. The first two quarters saw Martin Westview defeat McKenzie 14-7 and Henry County defeat Huntingdon 21-7. The game captains for Camden were seniors Daniel Woodall, Ryne Haynie, Ben Tinkle, and Shane Corbitt. We won the toss, and the cheerleaders had the break-thru sign ready as the team ran onto the field to start the game. In Jamboree format no kick returns are allowed, so Camden started on the 30-yard line. Josh Boyd took the first handoff from Ben Tinkle and sprinted around right end for a gain of 14 and a first down. Daniel Woodall took the quick hitter into the center of the line for no gain, 2nd & 10. Boyd, in motion left, took the handoff and made the turn for a pick up of 6. Heath Yoder followed the block of Camden center Josh Beasley and the Lions had another first down at the West Carroll 45!

Photo by Tony DillonBen Tinkle rolled left and threw a strike to a slanting Daniel Woodall who ran hard all the way to the 28, First down Lions! The Lions offensive line pushed for two yards in the inside counter play, before Ryne Haynie took the 2nd down handoff and sprinted around left end, danced along the sidelines and would have had the first down, but a holding penalty brought it all back, 2nd & 4. With 7:15 showing, Senior Quarterback Ben Tinkle rolled right and hit a slanting Ryne Haynie for a first down. Heath Yoder plowed over the middle, shook two War Eagles, and scored! Clay Carruth lined up his first extra point, booted it thru, and Camden was on top 7-0.

West Carroll was ready to roll on the legs of their junior running back Shane DePreist. First around right end of 9, then up the middle, spinning for a first down way over on our end of the field. Heath Yoder took a minute to make sure he was OK before waling off after that tackle, and play resumed. Daniel Woodall had a run around right end smoked out from the beginning, and made the stop for a loss of 1. A facemask penalty against us made it 1st & 5. A quick hitter over the middle was finally stopped by safety Brian Markham at the 26. They jumped before the snap & it was 1st & 15 at the 31. DePriest carried three Lions all the way to the 21 for a first down, followed by another illegal procedure against them. The 26-yard line must have been the perfect start, as the sprint ti the right pylon resulted in a score. Justin Smith smothered the two-point conversion, and with 4:51 showing, it was Camden 7, West Carroll 6.

Starting at our 30, Josh Boyd took the handoff from Ben Tinkle and hurdled over right tackle for two. With 2nd & 8, the War Eagles took a time out. Boyd countered inside for one, 3rd & 7. A throw over the middle to Woodall was incomplete, so Ben Tinkle punted it to their 34. With 3:43 left, the War Eagles were flying again, and a 25-yard run was followed by a 41-yard TD score. The QB keeper went for two, and with 3:04 showing it was WC 14, Lions 7.

Photo by Tony DillonJosh Boyd came out running hard on the next series and turned a sprint around left end into a 15 yard gain after a great downfield block by Brock Martin. Jesse Leonard busted the middle for a pickup of 6. Boyd was hit in the backfield, but his second effort turned into a positive three, great job! Ben Tinkle was back to pass & spotted a slanting Daniel Woodall over the middle. Daniel made a great catch in traffic, and ran for a first down at their 42! Great pass, catch, and run! Ryne Haynie in motion left to right, handoff from Tinkle, and motored for 6. The double handoff inside ends up with Maurice Gastelum slanting left for great run all the way to the ten-yard line and a first down! Jesse Leonard ran hard over the middle for a pick up of two, and that was the end of the half.

The War Eagles defense kicked it up a notch, and Boyd was stopped in the backfield for a loss of one. Ben had in mind to pass, but the whole flock was there to sack him at the 23. With 4th down at the 23, Ben was just barely able to get the ball away, but the pass fell incomplete, allowing the ball to go over on downs.

The Lions defense had to find a way to stop that War Eagle running game, but their first play was a big run over the right side for a first down at the 42. With 8:15 left in the contest, Justin Smith and Shawn French slammed the runner down for no gain. As the Eaglet QB rolled out, Daniel Woodall and Maurice Gastelum were there to pressure the incomplete pass. A run over the middle was only good for one, and the War Birds punted to our 25. Great stop, defense!

Ryne Haynie sprinted left to try to make the corner, but it was a War Eagle convention, no gain. An illegal procedure jump made it 2nd & 15 at our 20. A throw into the right flat was picked off, and the West Carroll back was able to score. Shane Corbitt and Ryne Haynie combined for the stop on the conversion, and with 5:47 showing it was WC 20, Camden 7.

Josh Boyd had blockers opening up a gap, and he was able to finish with Eaglets on his back after a gain of 8. Tinkle delivered to Gastelum over the middle for a first down ‘way out at our 47, great play! Haynie turns right end for a tough yard pick up. Boyd blasts the center and is stopped at the 50. With 3:30 showing, Camden takes a timeout to talk it over. The shovel pass in traffic is incomplete. Brian Markham rolls left and passes to a diving Josh Boyd on the left sideline, but the pass falls incomplete, and the ball goes over on downs. Yardage was still coming in big chunks, and the War Eagles finished the time with three victory-knee plays.

Camden opens regular season play at Waverly next week, then a region game at McKenzie on September 6th. Let’s all plan to travel with the team the next two weeks and support the Black & Gold!
